Republican or Democrat, Women Matter to This Election

By Alexis Glick

I never thought that I’d have to say this, but I’m saying it now. The double standard by which the press and politicians on both sides of the aisle are attacking Governor Sarah Palin’s ability to lead this country as the proposed Republican vice presidential nominee is disgraceful.

I have never considered myself a true feminist, although there is no doubt that, without something called the feminist movement, women like me would never have been given the opportunities that I have today. I am exceptionally grateful for that. However, where is the feminist voice now? Why is Palin’s ability to lead being called into question because she has five children? Has anyone looked at her record? Has anyone looked at how she fought with big oil to reclaim leased land or increase tax revenues for her state? Has anyone noticed that she has five beautiful children who represent the ideals of the American Dream?

Senator Barack Obama got it right on Sunday when he said hands off the family after the revelation that Palin’s 17-year-old daughter is five months pregnant. He did what he should have done, and what everyone who thinks this is a bombshell should do — he shut it down. Families are off limits.

Let me say this: it doesn’t matter whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, women matter in this election. Did you watch Senator Hillary Clinton last Tuesday night at the DNC? She was brilliant! One of the best moments in her career. She spoke about the issues, she rallied the base, she supported her ticket and she showed the American people, both Democrats and Republicans, why this country is ready to elect a woman in one of the highest offices in the country.

It is about two hours before Governor Sarah Palin is set to speak. I have no idea how she will do this evening, but I am rooting for her. I hardly knew this woman one week ago, but I always thought McCain selecting a woman on his ticket would be a brilliant move. It did more for him than any one vote or decision he has made along the campaign trail or in his twenty-six years in the Senate. He proved that he is a risk-taker, supports change over experience, age and family over party lines and he gave this country and his constituency the wake-up call that the Republican nominee needed to give – I’m in this to win and I’m not going to make safe decisions that speak to the Republican party’s base! I applaud him for that.

Don’t forget McCain has always been called a maverick. How ironic that he chose a woman who many now know and understand to be a maverick herself. The fact that she has five children, a son who enlisted in the Army, a daughter that is five months pregnant, a four-month-old son with Down syndrome whom she breastfeeds daily and pumps for at night while BlackBerrying her office with the next day’s agenda makes me respect her even more.

I don’t have five kids, I have three, but I know what it is like to become a multi-tasker and breastfeed between conference calls or pump before meetings while BlackBerrying at two o’clock in the morning. It makes her stronger, not weaker. How many of the pundits out there who are slamming her know what that is like? They don’t! I do, and you know what? Millions of mothers across this country do. They will respect her, sympathize with her and support her.

She may not get the 18 million people who voted for Senator Clinton because of ideological differences, but she will do more for this ticket and this country than people realize.

This is not an endorsement by any measure. Believe me, I play it straight down the middle. I see things about both of these presidential tickets that I feel very strongly about. I have voted for Democrats and I have voted for Republicans. That is no secret. I vote for who I believe in and whom I believe will make a difference.

Before you rush to judgment on Palin, read the facts and do your homework. The press went too far with Clinton. At times, me included. Yes, our job is to ask tough questions. Yes, when a candidate is selected for one of the highest offices in the country they have to be vetted and willing to face the good and bad that the press and politicians across the aisle will ask. Yes, McCain may have capitalized on the disgruntled Clinton voter — but at the end of the day, it is much too early to judge her ability to lead this country.

One final note, in case you missed it. I have not. Look at what McCain has done. Look at the three women in his life who he has tapped to be a part of his team.

Meg Whitman, national co-chair of McCain’s presidential campaign and former president and CEO of EBay (EBAY) from 1998 to 2008. A mother of two, married to a neurosurgeon and considered one of the most influential women in corporate America.

Nancy Pfotenhauer, a senior policy adviser to McCain, formerly president & CEO of the Independent Women’s Forum with two degrees in economics and the one-time chief economist for the RNC. She’s a brilliant speaker. Makes daily television appearances on behalf of the McCain camp discussing every issue. There is nothing she will not tackle.

Carly Fiorina, the former CEO and chairman of Hewlett-Packard (HPQ). Responsible for the most successful IPO in U.S. history with the initial public offering of Lucent. Now a top economic adviser for McCain. Widely regarded as one of the most successful female executives ever. Never had children of her own after attempting for many years because as she described it to the Wall Street Journal that “that wasn’t God’s plan.” She did help raise her two stepdaughters.

If the Obama camp is smart, they’ll notice what I am noticing, if they haven’t already. McCain is making a huge statement to women across this country by selecting these three women to help lead his campaign and potentially this country. What woman is doing that in the Obama camp?

Finally, I leave you with this — one of the few excerpts released from Governor Palin’s speech this evening:

“I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone. But here’s a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion - I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this country.”

BRAVO

ROFL! Talk about being in the tank for the Republican Party.

You guys at Fox aren’t even hiding it anymore. You’re screaming it with RIGHTEOUS FURY.

  3. Comment by ObamaSmears

Obama says family is off limits to the media and his crowd, then his paid hatchet men and his nutroots fans do their dirty work on the internet and in the adoring media.. So, Obama looks like the good-guy with a wink and a nod.

good ‘ol new style of politics by Obama, he has resorted to attacking down syndrome baby and 17 year old kid that has chose to turn a time of struggle into a blessing by embarrassing life and also getting married.

Obama’s a punk and an empty suit, with no experience to be Commander-In-Chief

Not an endorsement, huh? Could’ve fooled me.

Most moms I have spoken with are aghast that she’d take on this campaign and possibly the job itself with a special needs infant and a pregnant teen, who will need her mother (sorry, dads) in the coming year.

“WHY IS PALIN’S ABILITY TO LEAD BEING CALLED INTO QUESTION BECAUSE SHE HAS FIVE CHILDREN?”

    Dear Alexis, I think I know why…

If Mr. Todd Palin can give a hand in the house, then any gentleman can, right?

Men simply do not want their wife to realize this. It’s all about men’s laziness.

    well said and so true!

    Hurras for Governor Palin!

Her speech was spot on, her record is already that of a true maverik, her family is as American as apple pie, and her future will be a bright one.

She definitely does it ‘her way’, and America needs dedicated people like her to rid us of the parasites in Washington.

Obama likes to talk about ‘change’. I would advise him to take a look at Sarah’s political history to truly understand what it takes to create change.

God has again blessed America, and the republicans have finally earned my vote.

Governor Palin hit it out of the park!!!

  9. Comment by Marybel

My mother used to talk about a woman’s unique ability to have…”a steel hand in a velvet glove.” I have known many lovely, strong, confident women who exemplified this, but it is particularly gratifying to see this quality in a Vice Presidential candidate. I saw this quality tonight in Governor Sarah Palin at the RNC and I will rest well tonight. It is a gift and talent I will certainly factor into my choice in November. McCain must have noticed it immediately, most people do…it is quite an appealing trait.

  10. Comment by Mary

The speech was brilliantly delivered. Sarah Palin is a gifted communicator. She might even be a good leader and politician but we are still all struggling to get down to the bottom of what is hype and what is reality (I have voted 99% of the time Republican..so no “liberal” bias here). As a 50 year old woman it has been wonderful to watch women having a true opportunity to be considered for the highest offices in the nation and about time.

As a conservative Christian female - I struggle with Sarah Palin. I can’t figure out who she “is”…what she “stands” for. The Hockey Mom’s I know (and Soccer,Cross Country, Swimming, Track, Football, Band, Ballet, Gymnastics…you fill in the blank Mom’s) would never make an “un-required” career decision that appears so solidly to be against their children’s best interest. Please notice I am specifying “un-required”. I am not talking about food that needs to be put on the table or a move that has to be made to get a job or any other of a multitude of reasons why sometimes when the hard choice that has to be made might not be in the kids best interest but is the only one that can be made.

Sarah Palin’s family has shown signs of “stress” fractures in the past 2 years. We obviously do not have visibility into all the issues of the family but it is clear that they have major stressors on the family at this time. Ask any family with a four month old if they are not feeling exhausted, any family with a pregnant minor if that child does not need some extra mentoring and attention, any family with four at home if their hands were not full, any mother of a special needs child (especially an infant) if they were not overwhelmed with their focus on early intervention to obtain the best quality of life for their child.

Sarah Palin accepted tonight the nomination for the second highest job in this country. Unless she is superwoman or has a clone …I do not see how she can do the job justice and fill all the other shoes she has.

I find the “you just want women pregnant and at home” argument shallow. There is a lot of room between that and responsible career and parenting.

If Sarah Palin did not describe herself as a “Hockey Mom” (which implies that you are VERY involved in their lives)and if she did not state and so obviously believe that a child’s right to life was greater then the Mom’s preferences while the child was in the womb; I would not be so conflicted about her apparently lack of understanding at her children’s need for her right now… in ways that will be very difficult to fulfill as Vice President of the United States.

Did anyone ever get her that job description?

    Well said, Alexis.
I loved Governor Palin’s speech tonight. SHe struck the right cords and came across with humor and intelligence.
I, too, have a long history of multi-tasking; including being a working mom who pumped breast milk while enroute to my next Home Health patient. I now have 2 beautiful teenage daughters and a husband that I take care of, in addition to being the Trauma Coordinator at a large Midwest Medical Center. I also have a home business and stay busy with PTA.
My take on all of this is simple: Sarah Palin has walked a mile in my moccasins and I a mile in hers.
John McCain and Sarah Palin have my vote come November.

  12. Comment by Smokey

Yes Barack said hands off the family - however his minions the blogs and the mainstream media would not stop and he knew that. He played the only card he has in his hand “I said do not do that”, which is BS, and we all know it.

Sarah Palin introduced herself to the Republican Convention and the world outside of Alaska tonight and hit the home run of all home runs a Grand Slam! This woman is for real she is not a media created myth like Barack Obama is.

  13. Comment by Don Reed

    From an independent voter:

Within hours of knowing that McCain had selected Palin, I instinctively knew that those who would underestimate her - and the impact she’d have on this election - would quickly rue their lack of political smarts.

That now has been quickly proven to be true.

I watch very little TV. Fortunately, I caught her speech. She hit a grand slam. The entire event was a breath of fresh air, which is a polite way of saying that she had the oratorical impact of Hurricane Gustov.

I’ll wrap this up by saying that it’s really amazing to see any candidate, presidential or vice-presidential - from either party - who comes from a household that within the last five years has had to balance a personal budget. When was the last time that has happened?

  14. Comment by Angela

The issue I see is not female vs. male… it’s republican vs. democrat (stereotypes). If Palin were on the democratic ticket there would still be gender critics but this particular issue may be seen in a different light. A female democratic would stereotypically be expected by her party to do what a man would do. She would be expected to balance family and career the same way a man would. But the Republican party is stereotypically Christian and supports the idea that a woman stands behind the mand and takes care of the family (whether that is reality or not). So the issue becomes a matter of whether her party is going to cut her any slack in the long run if McCain is elected.

  15. Comment by Zmrzlina

Hooray! Well spoken! Nice to find a real working mother in the East Coast power centers.
Nice to find one who is a centrist, too.

  16. Comment by Gary

    Both side have strong candidates?

The Democratic ticket has NO strengths!

You had me until that remark.

  17. Comment by Karen

    I totally agree. Bravo indeed!

  18. Comment by Charlie

I’m forwarding this link to my wife, a Democrat who switched to McCain after watching Palin’s speech last night.

  19. Comment by chuck

I just loved her speech last night.
I believe mow Alexis the double standard of the lefits press in NYC and Washington DC shoud face the harsh glare and criticism. I heard Sara Palin’s sister isn’t returning calls from the Washington Post and New York Times who are in Alaska trying to dig dirt up on her. Next the cover of US magazine which should the pic of the VP with tag line Babies,Lies and Scandal should now get called on. Rolling Stone too should be called on becouse I since read I can tell you Jan Wenner has been preping Senator Obama up with in depth articles which personally I have been questioning. Where there is a double standard exists it should be tore down. But the Eastern Press and Networks like MSNBC thier ethics should be called into question. Left wing surrogate sites like Daily Kos and others should be reined in on eithical journalism abuse. Since I studied Journalism. When the Palin family was attack this is major breach of journalism ethics becouse thier politics is a threat. Honestly thier hypercrisy should now get called. It was my own wife and daughter who had been attack savagely I would not not only take them to court but I would put personally put them out of business. Journalist should act professinallly and you’re one who does. I don’t blame moms and single moms who are angry too. Line has been crossed and there are consequences.
But Sara was Jedi Knight last night and her she freaked them with her lightsaber. Obi Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader would be proud of her.

    Ms. Alexis Glick,

Thank you for your clarification, especially of Ms. Palin’s and your greatest contribution to your family and our nation…that of breastfeeding. Giving of yourself, your legacy of immunity to countless diseases and affording your newborn the best possible developmental environment is critical to building a great and compassionate society…and might add cost-effective.

The reduction in cost of care for our society by reducing ear infections, breast cancer in the mother, and better mental and physical abilities (my daughter is at MIT, and younger son a USA swimmer with a 1500 m. under 19 min. and straight A’s including Calculus) is monumental: I sued a local hospital, rather counter-sued, and won my freedom (dismissed without prejudice) because I asked a question ( I also defended and prosecuted my own case…and I haven’t stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, but my cousin’s husband was the former Dean of U of Tex law school and my mom’s brother was one of the foremost corporate attorney’s in Chicago. I was a hazard mitigation specialist for FEMA after Andrew in Miami, and am somewhat versed on criticality. My question to the court was: Why on July 1, 1994 did the state of Florida repeal a law that sanctioned over 40,000 bacteria per milliliter in infant formula, many of which explicitly were ecoli? Also why did they force-feed this garbage to my son against my wishes and the recommendation of Ernest Robbins Kimball Jr., MD, my dad, who was one of the founding advisors of the LaLeche League in Franklin Park, IL in 1956, and who had written a book, Parents in Positive Control, published in 1987? The opposing counsel looked white, and subsequently dropped all charges against my family.

My dad went on to receive the 4th Founder’s Award from LLLeague, Intl in 1999, at the age of 90. His acceptance speech in Washington DC told the story of how an adopting mother, who had endrometriosis and couldn’t conceive, but was convinced by my dad to breastfeed, did so during which time her symptoms of endro. disappeared, so much so that after 2 years of breastfeeding, she was able to conceive and had her own.

Quite deservedly proud of himself, he referenced a doctor who agreed that a cure for endrometriosis is there…not easy…and maybe a little maverick-like. In my youth in the early 60’s, I milked a Holstein cow, Bubbles, and sold the raw milk to neighbors. I have today somewhat popeye forearms, useful for opening any jar. Bubbles was the cow Encyc. Brit. used as a model for the Holstein in an edition of the encyclepedia (reportedly by the owner Pete Wagner, who milked 17 Holsteins on his 40 acre farm in Glenview, IL.) Pete and our family were solid: today Pete has donated his farm to the city as a working farm to teach children about animals. (A few years ago, there was some scandal about a bull mounting a cow in the pasture….wow.. that’s scary…)

Check it out….love to hear the follow-up.

What is amazing … is the female gender….having that extra leg to chromosome that makes it an X not a male….Y. There is certainly power and grace and humanity in that extra…we males may be more artfully dodging, faster with more muscles, but not as lifegiving…

Where would we be without women, moms, and strong leaders…I hope that mine and my dad’s efforts can increase the cost effective success of us all.

Thank you for bringing our attention to such important information…and say hello to another great Glick, Caroline Glick of the JPost. I suspect you share some DNA.

    Dave

I think it’t time to call it on Rep Barney Frank. I was on my Topix.com Forum and I saw the story which Barney Frank stated that the Palin Family is “fair game” for the campaign. To be blunt about it I believe it’s time for all of you working moms in the Broadcast Journalism now call in Rep Barney Frank for his statement. Honestly what is he afraid of? I call him for an interveiw and call in Dennis Miller and Bill O’Reilly on his case now. Barney has a right to free speak but when does he dictate the campaign ethics?
I say BRING IT ON the hard questions on Barney Frank now.

Now Ed Schultz, the progressive talkshow host for the Jones Network, has been careful in dissing Gov Palin. His callers have calling her speech with no substance. Honestly since I had public Speaking I graded both speaches.
I gave Obama an F. Here’s why: he lacked emotion, didn’t present solutions to some of the problems. In fact he wasn’t witty. A good public speaker politician or otherwise has to have terrific sense of humor. His forgettable speech lacked such humor. One observer called him “angry.”
Gov Palin. A+. She was funny. She was herself and appared to be in her own element. She made Speaker Pelosi look a muppet. But anyway she used her wit to get her points across. She address offshore drilling where Senator Obama lack conviction to do so in his speach.
Now Ed Schultz is doing everything in his power to get Obama elected. His ranked 3rd amont talkshow hosts. Schultz has been calling McCain a warmonger.
Listen you’re a better speaker than Obama.

Let us not be fooled by John Mc Cain. He knows he is losing this battle and for good reason. So he panders to females by choosing Palin as his running mate. What was he thinking???? She is an extreme right wing Republican - so is he pandering to the right wing, too? Must be. He keeps talking about his love of country - if that is true, how could he put someone like Sarah Palin a heartbeat away from the Presidency. How dare he insult women in America! It speaks volumes about his decision making abilities or lack thereof. i hope America wakes up and sees them both for what they represent - they stand for what is worst about America - not the best of what America is all about. THey are both bigoted, homophobic and falsifiers!!!!!! Shame on them both!

Now this has just broke over the Drudge Report.
Oprey Winfrey, the Obama Supporter, her and her staff are divided over having VP Sarah Palin on her show. Now her producer for the show donated money for the Obama Campaign. But there is a clear sharp division on her staff over Palin. Her website is getting flooded with email requests.
Question is will Operah play along? Or lose more viewers? Story is developing.
On Morning Joe on MSNBC Andrea Mitchell was confronted by an angry woman at Starbucks over the Palin Treatment by the press. Honestly the backlash has started.

  27. Comment by chuck

Kathy you’re the one whose insulting. Smart people are getting tired of the liberal cliche stereotypes you arrogant nobodies spout. Have you raised successfully five kids? Delt with one with Down’s syndrone? Or are you jealous liberal femininist. By the way VP Palin shot an ICBM across the media bow becouse of the stereotypical treatment the hustings get from from dinomedia. Pardon if I sound insulting but your canidate Senator Barack Obama studied the teachings of the Saul Alinksy. Watch Glenn Beck u may learn a little something. But to come out an insult someone from the State of Alaska who ran an entire state is beyond the word stupid. Idiotic. Mornonic.
Those of us in the masses are smarter than you think. Heartbeat away? I would rather trust her than some weak minded liberals I know.

  28. Comment by Melissa

I am so sick of hearing people say they cannot believe a mother would “do this” to her children. What I would like to know is what exactly is she doing to them? Is she abandoning them on the streets? NO Is she not feeding them? NO Is she in some way harming their health? NO! What she is doing is going through one of the most important job interviews of her life and her family is right there with her. I want to know why no one is questioning Obama’s parenting. He has 2 young girls, who will go through the exact same experience as the Palin children. Someone should tell Obama he is a horrible father for doing this to his children if they feel Palin is a bad mother. The sexist remarks are ridiculous and uncalled for. We should be applauding Sarah Palin for stepping up to this great challenge and showing that you don’t have to be from Washington to be somebody.

  29. Comment by chuck

Kathy you should be ashamed of yourself. Prejudging people without meeting them. Judging books by thier covers. Like that is so lame and so sixitish. Perhaps you should look into the mirror and see whose the bigot.
    Sorry if the truth hurts.

Alexis update from the DRUDGE REPORT:
Oprah Winfrey, queen of daytime, has decided not to let VP Sarah Palin on her show. Real question now: will this cause Oprah to suffer a backlash from her feminine vewiers? Especially those who are moms? Idea: send a field correspondant out and to guage reaction to Oprah’s NO to Sarah Palin. Has Palin shaken Oprah foundations? Last year she got into trouble with her viewers when she came out supported senator Obama. Wouldn’t hurt to get homemakers reactions across the board to Oprah Winfrey maybe playing politics. Idea: dig more on the fact about the division within her show that wanted Palin and didn’t want Palin. So has Oprah put herself in a corner she can’t get out of?

  31. Comment by chuck

The Oprey Winfrey story which first broke on the Drudge Report has now broke on the ABCNEWS.COM site. The title is “IS OPREY BEING BIASED?” the three page web report pointed out that there can be clear backlash that VP Palin has been BLACKLISTED. Yes,this word appeared in the body of the news report. Now get this Senator Obama appeared twice on her show. Now racial question is being tossed and strong word BACKLASH has appeared.
Oprey has tried denied what the Drudge Report broke this morning. Have your researchers check this story out.

I SURE HOPE THAT Gov. PALIN HAS THE CHANCE TO VISIT OUR TROOPS, BOTH HERE IN THE STATES
AND IN IRAQ. THEY ARE VOTERS AS WELL AS OUR DEFENDERS.

  33. Comment by FRED OHLIGER

I think shes great, being a Mayor and a Governor still gives her more experience than Obama, hes been nothing. All Women should be insulted at the thought she can not raise a family and be Vice President.Like many other women she could always use a type of day care. There are plenty of pregant teens out there that do not have thier Moms home with them, should they quit there jobs and go on welfare? She can also seek help with her special needs child like many other families do and with the support and help from her husband I do not see a problem. Shame on any one that would even consider this a issue.

  34. Comment by chuck

    The press backlash is paramount.
Already 10,000 subscribers have canceled out thier subscriptions with US magazine. What has been interesting Jenn Wenner who owns its has not gone public on the mag problems since things have exploided in his face last week. Now the sexists shoe is on the other foot.
Opray Winfrey isn’t out of the woods yet either. Already a group of Republica women are calling for Oprah to be boycotted. Now she’s suppose to be a champion for women right? She has committed a blunder with her fanbase and they not going to let her forget either.

  35. Comment by chuck

I suggest you bring back Kirsten Powers. Why? Ed Schultz, the lefite talk show host and die Obama supporter,is doing a townhall meeting in Ankorage,Alaska. He claims he wants to find out more about Sarah Palin or is another attempt to smear her. It wouldn’t hurt to have a Fox news producer this weekend to shock him since he got called on SEXISM and he’s been questioning her values. When honestly he doesn’t know the know whole story.
Already the Alaskans have been offended by the left wing liberal press and leftwing bloggers. By the way his radio show is third rated. On the pipeline is telling the truth or in reality is he really afraid of her. Now Ed S. has been on Fox before. I believe, like those in his left wing press, he should get called it on.
Encourage Kirsten Powers to call on him again. After all I can tell you from listening to him he went after the Hillary Clinton voters. Yes,he dissed them. Time ring him in.

  36. Comment by chuck

Last night Senator Obama blundered with his “lipstick” remark. It has backfired bigtime on him. Now he’s trying to blame the McCain camp for his statement last night. And he tried to say this in a press conference. But on MSNBC this morning Pat Buchannon has pointed out the crowd reaction to it. And they love it. Just this morning the New York papers were running wild with this.
At the sametime in Florida the Republicans Women boycott against Oprah is full swing. Now Gov Patterson of New York has made a big blunder with his own racist comment on the McCain camp. Already this smearing of Gov Palin has gone to far. But Barcak and company have blundered.
Hmmmmmmmmm wonder if any New York Reporters were arrested in Alaska? Now that would be a story. Pardon the sarcasm but the Democrats started it.
